Many retailers waive shipping once an order passes a set amount. It’s a useful deal, but it’s also designed to grow your cart. The question is never “Can I reach free shipping?” It’s “Is the total cheaper than buying what I need somewhere else?”
Read the fine print
Free-shipping offers often exclude certain items. Common exclusions include:
- Ammunition, which is heavy and often ships at a flat rate
- Powder and primers, which carry hazmat fees regardless of order size
- Oversized items, such as large rifle cases and safes
- Clearance or sale items
Check what counts toward the threshold before you plan an order around it.
When it’s worth it
Reaching a threshold makes sense when the extra items are things you would have bought soon anyway, like targets, cleaning supplies, magazines, or a second box of practice ammo. In that case, you’re just buying earlier and saving the shipping.
When it isn’t
If you’re adding something you don’t need just to save $10 in shipping, you haven’t saved anything. Compare the total against buying only what you need from the store with the lowest delivered price.
A $45 order with $8 shipping costs $53. Adding a $15 item you didn’t need to reach a $60 threshold costs $60. The “free” shipping cost you $7.
How Dialed Price handles it
Each store’s free-shipping threshold and exclusions are modeled, so listings show what you’d pay for the item alone. Watch for promotions too: many retailers run limited-time free-shipping events with lower thresholds.
